Recent studies have linked the drug Fosamax to a devastating condition called
osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), also known as Dead Jaw Syndrome. Fosamax, manufactured
by Merck, is an oral bisphosphonate used primarily in protecting bones that
have been damaged by osteoporosis and also for Paget's disease.
These studies have determined that numerous patients who have taken Fosamax
have developed this condition, despite Merck's claims of safety. ONJ prevents
the jawbone from healing correctly after usual dental procedures. There are
even severe cases where the jawbone essentially rots and dies. More than 2,400
people have experienced Jaw Death from taking Fosamax.
In addition to Fosamax, there are other bisphosphonates that are causing this
debilitating disease. There include Actenol, Aredia, and Zometa.
Merck's refusal to issue a Fosamax warning has helped to keep both
the medical community and the public unaware of the potential dangers
posed by Fosamax. A lawsuit filed in a US District Court alleges
that Merck deliberately concealed the drug's adverse side effects
from doctors and patients. The allegations stem from evidence suggesting
that Merck knew that Fosamax could cause ONJ and yet still neglected
to comply with the FDA's request to add a Fosamax warning to all
drug labeling.
Merck claims to have added a Fosamax warning label in July of 2005,
but this claim is misleading. Merck included the warning on page
13 of a 22-page document it distributes to pharmacies that fill
Fosamax prescriptions. It is very doubtful that the common patient
or doctor would ever see this concealed warning.
