Fosamax is a bisphosphonate that works specifically on bones to treat osteoporosis.
However, using Fosamax has recently been linked to causing a rare and serious
bone condition called Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ). Osteonecrosis is the most
serious of Fosamax side effects.
Osteonecrosis occurs when bone tissue deteriorates. The jaw bone fails to heal
properly after dental surgery while taking Fosamax. This is caused by a loss
of blood to the bones. Deterioration can then lead to death of the bone causing
severe pain. In a Fosamax side effects case, Osteonecrosis is affecting the
jaw bone which can lead to infections, pain and disfigurement, possibly requiring
surgery or long-term treatment.
Fosamax Side Effects include:
- Burring localized pain in jaw
- Loosening of teeth
- Limited range of motion in jaw
- Swelling, pain or infection in gums
- Numbness or heaviness feeling in jaw
- Osteonecrosis or "Dead Jaw"
